There is hardly anything in this world that no one can do a little worse and sell a little cheaper; and the people, who are only price-oriented, become the just prey of such machinations. It is unfortunate to pay too much, but it is even worse to pay too little. If you pay too much, you lose some money, that's all. On the other hand, if you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the purchased item can not fulfill its intended purpose. The law of the economy forbids to receive much value for little money. If you accept the lowest bid, you must add something to the risk you are taking. And if you do that, then you have enough money to pay for something better.
John Ruskin, English social reformer, 1819-1900
